I just read this afternoon that the average buyer spends 12 hours doing research before buying a new camera. I think I'd have to disagree with that. I think I've spent more time than that and I'm not even ready to make the purchase. I love my little Kodak Easy Share C533. I bought it when I was doing a lot on Ebay. It takes great close ups. Other shots aren't too bad. But after Brent let me use his $1700 camera in Carmel I realized what else I could be doing! I was amazed how far his Canon could zoom with the added lens. And how clear everything was. I told him he shouldn't have let me use it!
I've been playing with this new website today - BestInClass.com. You enter the characteristics of the camera you want in the left side bar and it will give you cameras that fit. You can choose the brand you want - Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, or Sony. Most of the people I've asked have a Canon. Here's the Canon digital camera recommendations. Anyone else want to add their suggestions?
I thought it was cute that I could even search for pink cameras! You can ask for cameras that fit in your jacket pocket or pants pocket. (I thought about Grandpa's little camera when I read this.) You can also enter other features that you want and what you're going to use it for.
I can get a much better camera now than what I paid for mine several years ago. Actually, both my daughters have "better" cameras than me now and I paid less for both of them. :-( Well, it still looks like the camera I really want is still out of my price range. Gotta pay for a wedding first. lol...

Camera Envy... So expensive when you catch that bug...
When we visited you guys last year, one of the ladies with us on the trip had a Canon. Wendell drooled. That's how we ended up with our Nikon the next month. Somehow I ended up paying for it... (money I was actually saving for my laptop...) I think we said it was his "Father's Day Present", but it's really mine.
Anyway, we got the Nikon D60 because it had all the specifics we needed. Sports, poorly lit school gyms, "big room" at church and so forth. We even got the extra zoom lens (55-200mm) at a great discount because of the Father's Day deal. I highly recommend the big zoom lens option. I could get one that goes 0-200 or something like that all in one lens, but it's as much or more than the camera itself... Would be nice, though.
I've heard of a few camera deals lately because of Mother's Day. Love the improvement in picture quality!!
I am not a great photographer, but I love saving a memory. My husband bought mine - he called my mom and asked her what kind she had - and bought the same one. So his research was about 5 minutes - maybe they average out!! :)
It's an Olympus FE 230 which has gotten unfavorable reviews, but works fine for me and any problems I have I usually can edit in picasa. I actually like my old non-digital camera better, but this one is great for always having around to get a picture of my kids without having to think too much. It is definitely not a high-end camera, so I really can't recommend it. Beaver's sounds great, though!!
My personal choice would be the Canon EOS Digital Rebel, if I could afford it. Digital SLRs take great pictures. We got Andy a pocket size Canon for Christmas but I don't remember what model.

After looking around (a few minutes- really only one), I choose a pretty yellow disposable!
